He put his phone back in the desk drawer and went to the nurse’s station. He grabbed another chart and immediately got busy with his next patient. It was going to be a busy day.

Grant was right. It was, in fact, a busy and exhausting day in the ER. He was studying another chart and was stifling a yawn just as Todd, one of the newest doctors, rounded the corner.

Todd chuckled. “You don’t look well, my friend.”

Grant snickered. “Gee, thanks!”

He flipped the chart open and looked it over. A five-year-old child suffered from a dog bite. The notes said the mom had cleaned the wound and was able to stop the bleeding. It wasn’t the easiest of patients to get through because he always thought about Bri when he was taking care of a pediatric patient.

“I didn’t mean anything by it. I know you’ve had a long day. When I worked in Cleveland, I was constantly working double shifts and it could really take a mental and physical toll.”

“So you transferred to a hospital that is constantly short-staffed?” Grant asked with an arched brow.

He was glad that Todd was here, though. The moment he interviewed him, he knew Todd would be a good fit, but he found it ironic and Todd laughed.

“Even on a busy day, it’s not as busy as Cleveland. I really enjoy it here, but, truth be told, I’m here because of a woman.” He laughed and rolled his eyes. “That didn’t work out, but I’m trusting the job will last longer.”

Todd picked up a chart and chat was over. Both men got back to work.

“Daddy!” Bri called as she entered the ER.

Grant looked up and smiled, and Bri ran over to him and gave him a big hug.

“There’s my baby girl.” He hugged her back and didn’t notice Todd watching the exchange until he parted from the hug. “Todd, this is my daughter, Bri. Bri, this is Dr. Masterson.”

“Pleased to meet you,” she said.

She held out her hand. The astonished look said it all as Todd looked down at his daughter.

He shook her hand. “Likewise.”

Grant waved at Ginger, who stood at the counter. “Hey, Ginger. Thank you so much for agreeing to sit last minute. I owe you big.”

She shrugged. “No biggie. Glad to help.”

She casually glanced at Todd. Her cheeks turned red and she quickly looked away. Todd, Grant discovered, was returning the interest.

Grant smirked and turned his attention on Bri. “I have one more patient to see. You guys can go wait in my office and I’ll be there as soon as I’m done.”

“Okay, Daddy!”

Bri held Ginger’s hand and pulled her away towards his office.

Todd’s eyes were still focused down the hall where Ginger and Bri had disappeared.

Grant cleared his throat. “Everything alright?”

Todd turned to him.

“Yeah. Your daughter, she’s something else,” he said.

Grant was sure that Todd was more intrigued by Ginger than by his seven-year-old daughter, but he held back from pointing that out.

“Yeah. She’s pretty amazing,” Grant said. “Gonna go take care of this patient.
